The African Union (AU), through its various departments and divisions as well as partner agencies, will be participating in various plenary sessions during the RewirEd summit taking place at Expo 2020 Dubai.

The summit happens during Expo’s Knowledge & Learning week, where the various events look to find answers to the critical and strategic question; in how the world can harness and challenge current knowledge today to prepare for the future. The Political Affairs & Peace and Security; Education, Sciences, Technology and Innovation as well as the Centre for Girls and Women's Education in Africa, are the leading departments from an African continent perspective.

During the three-day groundbreaking summit, three African innovators, in education, will be rewarded with cash injections that will allow them to grow their projects, helping deliver sustainable learning for all.

The AU’s Expo 2020 Deputy Commissioner General, Charles Chiumya said that “the week ahead serves [us] ample opportunities to connect African experts with their global peers, sharing intellectual properties as the world looks to develop in sustainable harmony across the various sectors, especially education,”

“it is important that we continue to reflect on our past as a way of harnessing past generational wisdom, helping us shape the future of the next. Important that we share in exchanges, tips on how we adapt so as to equip the young with skills that will be key to their future success; thus levelling the playing field which will ensure access to quality education for all Africans” concluded Chiumya.

During the breakaway plenary sessions at the RewirED summit, the AU’s Education, Sciences, Technology and Innovation (ESTI) department will champion the ‘Innovation in Education’ session, to find solutions that transform Africa’s education landscape in through innovative solutions that will promote access, quality, equity and relevance.

African based intelligence will also take center stage on the final day of the RewirED summit, led by the AU’s International Centre for Girls' and Women's Education in Africa (CIEFFA) as they will lead the Spotlights on Africa plenary session, with the strategic objective of ‘creating inclusive opportunities for all African girls’.

Head of CIEFFA, Dr. Rita Bissoonauth believes that “this session will celebrate and showcase experiences of role models in STEAM, TVET and explore challenges faced by young women in STEAM affiliated industries, creating more awareness on the 21st skills Initiative and access to labour market through dialogue with private sector,”

“We want to identify opportunities and possible avenues of collaborations for young women in TVET and STEAM within AfCFTA and the global market; education has a ripple effect that increases both our quality of life and health” concluded Dr. Bissoonauth.
